Turning Point for Women and Families

Turning Point for Women and Families is the first community based, non-profit organization to directly address domestic violence in NYC’s Muslim community.

Turning Point for Women and Families

Founded in 2004 in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, we responded to an urgent need for culturally sensitive domestic violence services.

Turning Point for Women and Families

Since then, our work has grown exponentially to support survivors in seeking safety, elderly Muslim women in breaking isolation, and Muslim girls and young women in becoming leaders.

Our Mission

Turning Point for Women and Families’ mission is to help Muslim women and girls affected by domestic violence to empower themselves and transform their own lives as well as those of their families. Turning Point provides a diversified range of culturally competent services focused on safety and self-sufficiency through direct services, advocacy and referrals. Deeply rooted in the Muslim community, Turning Point believes that social change can be effected by raising awareness about the prevalence and effects of domestic violence, addressing it directly and offering safe spaces and opportunities for youth development.

Our Vision

Turning Point believes that every woman and girl deserve to live a life with dignity and free of violence.

Our Services

Direct Services

We provide free and confidential counseling, advocacy and referral services for women and children affected by domestic violence.

Youth Program

Through our youth group, leadership workshops, and anti-bullying workshops, we provide teenage Muslim girls ages 13-20 with a nurturing “safe space” where they learn to cope with personal issues and social pressures in a post 9/11 era.

Outreach & Education

We work with community leaders and organizations to raise awareness around domestic violence, its impact, and how to effectively support survivors in the community.

Senior Services

We offer weekly ESOL and Citizenship Prep classes for senior women (age 60 and over). We also offer support and counseling to victims of elder abuse.

Transitional Housing

Lack of safe and affordable, permanent housing is one of the biggest barriers to leaving an
abusive relationship.

Turning Point for Women and Families deeply condemns yesterday’s incident of unwarranted aggression by the NYPD against protestors. The incident serves as a reminder of an ongoing need for accountability and reform in law enforcement. At Turning Point, we stand against all forms of violence. This incident is particularly disheartening in the wake of our collaboration as a plaintiff in a successful legal action against the NYPD for forcefully removing Muslim women's hijabs and violating their rights. Clearly, the implementation of the promised policy change has been neglected. This highlights the uphill battle for justice that still lays ahead of us. Incidents like this only strengthen our resolve to continue advocating for fairness, equality, and respect for all individuals in our community. https://www.courthousenews.com/nyc-agrees-to-17-5-million-settlement-over-forced-removal-of-hijabs-for-mugshot-photos/
